Development work in Islamabad Sector G-14 to start within couple of days

At last, the development work in stalled Sector G-14, which was launched about nine years back, would kick off in the next few days.

 Pakistan is a developing country in South Asia having a total estimated population of 177 million in 2011. The total civilian labour force is 58.41 million out of which 55.17 million is employed. At the time of independence in 1947, Pakistan was an agrarian economy where the contribution of agriculture towards gross domestic product (GDP) was 53 percent during the fiscal year 1950. Pakistan among bottom-20 in Global Competitiveness Report 2012-2013

 * Falls 6 points on the Global Competitiveness Ranking to 124th place among 144 economies

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has been ranked among the bottom 20 of the 144 economies around the world in the Global Competitiveness Report (GCR) 2012-2013, released on Wednesday by the World Economic Forum (WEF).

According to the GCR 2012-13, Pakistan lacks a long-term view of competitiveness. The level of corruption and poor governance are some of the factors slowing down Pakistan’s economic growth, therefore ranking Pakistan at 124 among 144 other countries on the index. Pakistan is faced with crippling energy crisis, which has resulted in slashing gross domestic product (GDP) growth by 2.0 to 3.0 percent.

This was stated by Attock Gen Limited (AGL) and Attock Refinery Limited Chief Executive Officer Adil Khattak during the first Coal Fuelled Power Generation Conference 2012. The conference was organised by AGL on Wednesday.

India far behind Pakistan and China in nuclear technology: experts

LONDON: The world’s leading nuclear experts have revealed that Indian nuclear technology and capabilities are far behind than its putative adversaries, Pakistan and China.

Hans M Kristensen, director of the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists and Robert S Norris, Senior Research Associate Natural Resources Defence Council Inc, Washington, in the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists revealed that for New Delhi, the principal means of weapons delivery remains fixed-wing aircraft like the Mirage-2000 and the Jaguar. LAHORE: Asma questions transparency in Arsalan Iftikhar case

 Veteran lawyer Asma Jahangir has said that there were numerous reservations and questions with regards to the Arsalan Iftikhar case. She proposed to call a Scotland Yard team to probe the case if country’s institutions were not trustworthy for judiciary.

While talking to media at Lahore High Court Bar Association, Asma said that the Supreme Court was not meeting the requirements of delivery of justice in the case of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry’s son, Arsalan Iftikhar.

ISLAMABAD: Thar Coal to generate 100MW electricity from next year

The nation is likely to hear a historic good news before June next year. Pakistani will start getting electricity from Thar Coal for the first time in the history by the end of the current financial year 2012-2013, disclosed Dr Shabbir, the Managing Director of Planning Division’s Thar Coal Power Project, while talking to this correspondent.

 This electricity will be generated by using gas produced by Underground Coal Gasification (UCG), MD further stated.

For this revolution, the remaining amount of Rs900 million must be released by the Government of Pakistan in the beginning of second quarter of fiscal year 2012-2013. Ministry of Finance has released the first installment of Rs900 million on 27th August, 2012. This amount was allocated for the financial year 2011-2012. KARACHI: Government reduces age limit of used cars’ imports from 5 years to 4

Importers and dealers of used cars have blamed local automobile industry for spreading propaganda against them to reduce the depreciation limit up to four years.
All Pakistan Motor Dealers Association (APMDA) has sent a letter to the prime minister in response to recent government action, demanding to revert back the decision and allow the imports of up to five-year-old used cars.

In a strange ‘coincidence’, the big guns of Pakistan’s diaspora comprising the mighty lot of journalists, politicians, parliamentarians, bureaucrats, ruling elites and their near and dear ones have interestingly grabbed lucrative plots located at the prime locations during the ‘fixed’ balloting of a housing project called Park Enclave.
It happened just recently when, to the pleasant surprise of the influential elite, it so transpired that the ‘lucky winners’ and beneficiaries of the CDA’s so-called balloting for Pak Enclave, its much hyped housing society, happened to be all the powerful individuals.

Students say government ban on sheesha unjustified

Café owners protest against raids, say business destroyed

Despite the City District Government Lahore (CDGL) imposing a ban on sheesha smoking, a large number of youngsters, both male and female, and even professionals belonging to different fields are still visiting cafes for sheesha as they claim sheesha smoking to be a “healthy recreational activity”.

The CDGL had started a crackdown against sheesha cafes in the city four months ago and almost all sheesha cafes were sealed in the process. The Lahore High Court (LHC) later gave permission for reopening the cafes, however, the raids continued during which the government officials confiscated sheesha hookahs and arrested workers and in some cases the customers as well.
