Pakistani ICT project wins World Summit Youth Award

From a total of 612 projects submitted from 102 countries, a Pakistani project of the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication is among winners of the World Summit Youth Award (WSYA), a global initiative that selects and promotes the world’s best e-content and innovative ICT applications.

Funded by the National ICT Research and Development Fund, the Rs26.9 million project is titled ‘Remote patient monitoring system with a focus on antenatal care for rural population,’ and is being executed by a team of researchers of ‘nexGIN RC FAST-NU’ headed by Dr. Mudassar Farooq.

The objective of the project is to develop a reliable, efficient and easily deployable remote patient monitoring system that can play a vital role in providing basic health services to the remote village population of Pakistan at their doorsteps through ICT.

The proposed system will record the patient’s data and forward it to the PDA through a wired channel and consequently provide feedback through the PDA notifying decision given by the Clinical Decision Support System. The details of the project can be found at

The World Summit Award supports the Millennium Development Goals of ending poverty, hunger and disease, saving the environment and giving a fair share to women. It is the global contest for online or mobile initiatives to raise awareness and help resolve the most pressing global issues. WSYA showcases young developers’ projects and serves as a platform for people from all UN member states to work together on the efforts of reaching the MGDs.

Amongst the five categories, the Pakistani project was selected in category 1: Fight Hunger, Poverty and Disease. The projects were evaluated in a three-round judging process by an international WSYA Jury 2009 consisting of 20 experts.

The WYSA winners will take centre stage in Monterrey, Mexico, during the United Nations Global Forum on ICT and Development and WSA Winner celebrations in June 10-13, 2009. They will showcase their projects to government and business leaders, representative of civil society and the international community. The official public announcement and celebration of the WSYA winners will take place at the WSYA 2009 Winners Gala on June 12, 2009 in Monterrey.
