Islamabad: Pakistan’s election commission has initiated steps to evolve a mechanism to enable millions of nationals living abroad to vote in elections in thier homeland.
Chief Election Commissioner Qazi Muhammad Farooq has constituted a special committee for the purpose, which is headed by the secretary of the election commission Kunwar Dilshad.
Dilshad said Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani during a recent visit visit to Saudi Arabia had assured right of vote to Pakistanis residing outside the country.
The ministry of overseas Pakistanis has been pressing the election commission to make arrangements for extending right of franchise to nationals living abroad.
The committee would examine the issue thorougholy and work out viable modalities, the election commission senior official said.
