Lung cancer will soon become the leading cause of mortality all over the world, Dr Adnan Ali Zaidi, a well-known oncologist at the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) said on Saturday. He was addressing a seminar on lung cancer organized by the Seminar Committee at the University of Karachi (KU) Faculty of Pharmacy, in collaboration with Roche Pakistan Ltd.
The most important cause of lung cancer is smoking, Dr Zaidi said. He emphasized importance of lifestyle in the prevention of cancer which would cut down the risk of the disease to one-third or half. “The worst part is the diagnosis while the treatment for lung cancer is still poorly developed in the country and the rest of the world as well,” he said.
Dr Zaidi said that 70 percent of lung cancer patients die within a year. He appreciated the role of the KU Faculty of Pharmacy in creating the cognizance about different fatal diseases, their causes, symptoms and treatment through familiarity programmes.
Concluding the seminar, Dean Faculty of Pharmacy Dr Waseemuddin Ahmed presented a memento to the speaker, chief guest and Roche representative Imtiaz Ahmed. The event was attended by more than 500 students, teachers and allied professionals.
