Loud music damages hearing sensitivity

Associated Press of Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Continued loud music from MP3 or Mobile phones and other devices through headphones etc can permanently damage hearing, medical experts warned.

“Young people are at risk of premature hearing loss, listening to loud music with earphones might be entertaining, but listening to it for more than 90 minutes a day can damage your hearing.”

Experts found that people who listened to music at 80 percent of volume capacity, at which point the sound is considered loud, should stick to under 90 minutes a day, Health news reported.

If a person exceeds that on one particular day and avoids use of one’s headphones for the rest of the week, one is not at higher risk, study revealed. This relates to someone who’s exceeding 80 percent for 90 minutes day after day, month after month, for years.

The study also found no problems for people who listened to music at 10 percent to 50 percent of maximum volume for extended periods. It found, however, that anyone who listened at 100 percent for more than five minutes faced the risk of hearing loss.

People who consistently listen to high levels of volume don’t realise that hearing loss can take up to 10 years to show up. Teenagers going to be 23, 24, 25-year-old have a measurable noise-induced hearing loss and now have another 60- something years to live with his hearing, which is only going to get worse.

In-ear earphones, which broadcast sound directly into the ears, are no more dangerous than headphones that are placed over the ears.

Ringing in your ears is a sign your ears are trying to recharge after some type of noise trauma. Experts also say ear-buds can be much more harmful than regular earphones because the buds go in much deeper into the ear canal.

Researchers fear the growing popularity of portable music players is contributing to hearing loss in younger people. Doctors say today’s youth will end up wearing hearing aids before their time.

It’s a noisy world, but it’s getting even noisier for millions of young people who like to bring loud sounds right inside their heads. Hearing loss experts see this trend across the nation, older ears on younger bodies.

Ipods and other MP3 players with earbuds that attach directly to the ear, including cell phones, are contributing to hearing loss in younger people.
