PESHAWAR: Known for making grammatical mistakes in his speeches, President George W Bush showed another side of his interesting character recently when he winked to someone during Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani’s statement to members of the press at the White House in Washington.
Viewers who watched the live TV coverage of the event are still talking about the wink that the US president gave to somebody sitting in the front rows meant for journalists. The winking Bush had a mischievous smile on his face as he made the strange gesture. Camerapersons were alert enough to catch the president in the act of winking. The footage has been shown again on some television channels and before long it would be available on
websites and mobile phones.
The US president looked amusing while winking. In fact, he would have thought that this was something funny. But it wasn’t. The winking by President Bush was in poor taste. One doesn’t know if this is the style of President Bush or he is used to doing this winking as habit. As one hasn’t seen him doing this before, it was thus intriguing to watch the US president happily winking away at a gathering of high-ranking American and Pakistani officials.
President Bush’s act of winking reminds one of another head of state and government who does this all the time. He is none other than Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai, who owes his position to the US and is still in power due to President Bush’s unqualified support.
However, Karzai doesn’t wink deliberately. It is something natural and he seems helpless to control it. For those aware of his winking, it doesn’t come as a surprise. But those meeting President Karzai for the first time are taken aback when he winks while talking.
