Islamabad, 31 August: UAE Ambassador to Pakistan Ali Saif Al-Awani met with the governor of Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa, Owais Ghani at his office and briefed him about the integrated relief operations of the UAE teams since the very beginning of this natural calamity hit the province. He also shared with Governor the different activities of UAE Red Crescent medical team having a filed hospital in the province.
On the directives of UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan the UAE Armed Forces, Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation, Crescent Red and Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Charitable Society started their relief and airlifting operations in the most affected areas of super floods in the country further said by the ambassador.
He enlightened the Governor about the intensified vaccination campaign carrying out by the UAE Red Crescent along with United Nation Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and local charitable hospitals Peshawar. He proudly shared that so far more than 250,000 people have been vaccinated against measles, polio, tetanus and vitamin in addition to other medical services. Moreover, he said that the medical team will extend its vaccination campaign in the different areas of the province and after its completion moves to other regions too.
The Governor Owais Ghani expressed his gratitude and thanked on the behalf of people of Pakistan for all the noble works done by the UAE government and its organizations in the country and especially in the province. The President of UAE Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has affection and special place in his heart for the Pakistani people, by pointing out that the UAE has always been at the forefront whenever Pakistan faced a natural catastrophe or requested help from the United Arab Emirates he further added.
He thanked the Ambassador for his commitment to the humanitarian cause. He explained that the ongoing super floods was the resultant of many factors not confined only to climate change, torrential rains, overflowing rivers, shortage of dams, unprotected canals and land water logging. He further said that this natural catastrophe has bigger socio-economic consequences and losses than to what happened in the 2005 earthquake in Pakistan and the Asian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina in America.
He briefed about the main task in the next stage afterwards of floods and said that supply of food and medicines to affected people would be foremost priorities during the next eight months because flood waters have badly ruined cropping and livestock, destroyed orchards, wrecked canals systems and badly damaged the infrastructures in the province. The colossal losses due to this flood may be lessened after three years he further said. He said that the Government of Pakistan has decided to reduce its expenses and diverted its resources to reconstruction and rehabilitation activities.
He praised the brotherly contributions of Muslim countries in the time of national crisis and acknowledged the United Arab Emirates being the first country to respond on time and not announced but also sent emergency pledges, donations and relief goods after the appeal made by the Government of Pakistan.
Afterwards, the Ambassador inspected relief work carried out by several UAE’s organizations. He appreciated the good works of different UAE medical teams having a mobile field hospital.
The Ambassador Al Awani aslo met with Zahir Shah the provincial Minister of Health in Peshawar and briefed him about the ongoing health and vaccination programs in the province. He said that second plane from UAE carrying cargo of 35 tons of relief goods, medicines and medical supplies has been landed.
The Minister Shah appreciated the different health and relief operations of UAE medical team in order to improve health conditions and prevent epidemic diseases in the most affected areas. He thanked the timely response of UAE government and its visionary leadership to deliver urgent help to mitigate the impact of the disaster and end the sufferings of the struggling people facing malnutrition and shortage of medicine.
The UAE Ambassador visited the field hospital of the medical team of the Red Crescent Authority installed in Abasin charity hospital in Nakai. He met with the UAE volunteer doctor’s utlising the services of Al Ibrahimi Trust hospital in Peshawar and Brahimi charity which receives most cases from villages. Khan Zaman the head of the hospital was pleased with the ongoing vaccination campaigns to reduce chances of any plague disease. He added that the hospital consists of five floors and is equipped with medical professionals who are advised to render their services to UAE Red Crescent.
