ali_sethiMuslims in Mumbai: they had become real to me on my last night in Bangalore. I was sitting in an auto-rickshaw with Sai and Khan and was going, after eating my first dosa in a crowded street, to have a special kind of chai at a place called the Makkah Cafe

“And how does it feel?” said Mr Singh, the short, plump man who had shown me into my room at the hotel. I said, “It’s a lot like Lahore.” But that was only partly true. The way the leaves of trees hung above the roads of Delhi, obscuring the sky, and the meringue-like buildings on Connaught Place — these were like bits of Lahore. But there had also been temples on the way from the airport, and signboards that gave the names of streets in three different scripts. A woman was standing at the hotel entrance in a blue-and-red uniform, which was like the uniform worn by Lahore’s recently inducted female traffic wardens, but most of them had been quickly chased away by whistling car-drivers. askariSupport for Islamist discourse on national and international issues and militancy is reflected in the electronic media and the press, especially the Urdu press. Some columnists and TV anchors present an extremely slanted view of politics and society

It is reassuring that Pakistan’s army, air force and paramilitary have dislodged the Taliban from Malakand and are now concentrating on South Waziristan. The current single-minded approach of the civilian government and the military authorities for countering terrorism has checked the creeping advance of the Taliban-led militancy into mainland Pakistan. Balochistan is not just a land but a story full of courage , determination  and adventure. The readers are always expecting something new something novel at every line and every word. All time new challenges new threats, new fronts and new battles; but salute to the brave people of Balochistan for never giving up the courage and determination even in the most alluring moments when their veiled enemies are offering them a hypocritical hand of friendship trying to drag them to a heavenly hell. The industrial sector has a larger potential to contribute but is on hold due to poor policy initiatives, lack of innovation and diversification in products for meeting the needs of domestic and global consumers

By M. Sharif

A steep dip of 8.49 per cent in industrial production during the first 11 months of the last fiscal year compared to the highest growth of 19.9 per cent during FY 2004-05 and the necessity of boosting industrial production, raises many questions about industrial revival in difficult times of domestic fiscal and monetary constraints, global economic recession and shrinking global trade. The government, at least theoretically, aims at pursuing an export-led economic growth to raise Pakistan’s share in global trade that during the last decade has shrunk from 0.21 to 0.13 per cent, according to WTO data. How can this be translated into something concrete and real? This question has to be at the heart of new industrial policy that the government intends to unveil before the end of the current year. There are many misconceptions about Pakistan’s economy, which have either been created deliberately or are the outcomes of ignorance. One such misconception deals with the power sector. It has been generally argued over the last two years that not a single unit of power has been added in the past seven or eight years or why the generation capacity was not increased to keep up with demand. In this article I intend to clear this misconception by presenting facts. Continue reading »

Subsequent to inhumane attacks in 09/11 in USA and 07/07 in London, the use of disgusting words Islamic terrorism, Islamic militancy and Islamic fundamentalism make me crushed inwardly. In Western society, the name of Islam and Muslims is analysed within the prism of these heinous terms. Under current scenario of suicidal attacks by the Muslim not only on non-Muslims, but on different sects of Muslims like Shia and Sunnis, comes to fore the bleak picture of Islam. The waves of attacks on minorities groups in Pakistan which make five percent of the total population including Christians, Sikhs, Hindus, and Zoroastrians under the cover of Blasphemy Laws more worsen the situation towards understanding of Islam by the Westerns. Whereas the objective analysis of Islamic teachings compels ones to dispel such misconceptions the universal religion of Islam is plagued with. During my study at the University of Nottingham, I was flabbergasted over the opinion of not only mature students but teachers as well concerning Islam. The beard of Sikhs is nothing to do with terrorism; however, the same appearing on the Muslims’ face starts breeding concerns invoking likely presence of some extremists and terrorists. This distorted thinking of the West poses major challenge to the followers of Islam that how to put the actual friendly image of Islam before the world? Continue reading »

The British government has come up with a new idea on how to tailor citizenship to political loyalty and the country’s economic needs. Under a new points system, an applicant’s skills and respect for British values will count in his/her favour, while those showing an “active disregard” for these values will be penalised by having points taken away.

By Anwar Syed

It has been the usual practice of Pakistani politicians facing harassment or more intense persecution at home to look for safety and comfort in London. Following his ouster from the presidency in October 1958, Iskander Mirza lived there for the rest of his days.

The pension he received from Ayub Khan’s government did not go far and he worked in a middle management position in a hotel to supplement his income. He chose to remain silent on the affairs of Pakistan.Altaf Hussain, the MQM boss, has been living in London for a number of years now. He directs the affairs of his party in Pakistan from his offices in London. Other leaders, Benazir Bhutto among them, resided in London for periods of time. They commented on political developments in Pakistan and, while in London, tried to guide their followers back home. Continue reading »
