NEW DELHI: Terming Kargil as a “big success”, former President General (r) Pervez Musharraf has said India agreed to discuss Kashmir only because of that war in 1999.
“Yes, indeed, it was a big success because it had (an) impact even on the attitudes of the Indian side. How did we start discussing the Kashmir dispute? How was it that the Indians agreed that we will discuss Kashmir and there must be a negotiated settlement? Before this there was no such thing at all,” Musharraf said in a TV interview. The Lahore Development Authority placed advertisements in national dailies this week of its intention to widen the Canal Bank Road. The decision is another example of how people with good intentions but no relevant experience can lead a city down a path to disaster.
Lahore hit headlines last week, but for altogether the wrong reasons. It is now the most polluted city in the country. The emissions from industry and automobiles have rendered its air un-breathable. The Supreme Court on Wednesday summoned General (Retd) Pervez Musharraf to defend himself in a case brought to the court by the Sindh High Court Bar Association against the validity of his November 3, 2007 declaration of emergency and the issuing of the Provisional Constitution Order (PCO) which effectively ousted 60 judges from the higher judiciary of the country.
