Despite Western media prognostication, there is no possibility of an extremist or jihadi government assuming office in Islamabad. Neither the Pakistani electorate nor the Pakistan Army would accept this
The India-Pakistan confrontation following the Mumbai attacks is the fourth such crisis in the last two decades. While India says it has provided enough evidence to Pakistan, Islamabad says what it has been given cannot be taken to a court of law for prosecution. Also, there is still no solid evidence that the Mumbai attacks were planned by a Pakistani group; or that the attackers were all Pakistanis. The audio recording of one of the attackers, available online, includes the use of Hindi words not in the Pakistani lexicon. Continue reading »

In addressing the problems of the city of Lahore Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif commissioned several task forces to provide immediate solutions. So far this year, the task force on commercialisation has put an end to the LDA’s city-destroying practice of permitting commercial activity in residential areas. The task force on billboard advertising reform has had its recommendations put into practice and several hundred of those unsightly, unsafe and intrusive forms of graft revenue have been dismantled. This measure, in particular, should be appreciated as it indicates that there are urban forces at work in this city that do not measure success by profit alone. The city looks all the better for it as well. Continue reading »
People with a disorder that causes them to kick or cry out during deep sleep are more likely to develop dementia or Parkinson’s disease, a new Canadian study suggests.
“It’s basically a disorder where you act out your dreams at night,” explained study author Dr Ronald B Postuma, of McGill University in Montreal. “When people who have RBD [REM Sleep Behaviour Disorder] dream they are in a fight, which is very common, they will make punching movements.”

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday claimed that the global financial turmoil has encouraged the “Internet underworld” that is engulfing the globe. “The development is enhancing the cost of doing business everywhere and creating new challenges for the already dull economies,” said President PEW Dr Murtaza Mughal while talking to journalists here.

India’s road to regional leadership and eminence at the global level passes through the capitals of its neighbouring states, especially Pakistan. India cannot achieve its political agenda or control terrorism by engaging in military brinkmanship or war with Pakistan

There is truth to the fact that self-assertion and survival against India is part of our national identity. Every child raised in Pakistan learns early thus to revere the military. In recent years, our very sense of national pride is constructed on our possession of a lethal technology that can unleash unimaginable suffering and destruction Continue reading »
During this entire year, governance was typified by a lack of policy in any field, and let me clarify that to me a policy begins with a clearly stated aim, a duration for the achievement of that aim, and a wholesome methodology that will get us there within the specified period of time Continue reading »
Another survey from the International Republican Institute carried out in Pakistan over October 15-30 this year points to popular perceptions that among other things make the challenges within and without appear even more formidable
The high level of tension between India and Pakistan in the aftermath of the Mumbai blasts, having gone down somewhat, is on the rise again. India contends that Pakistan has not delivered on its promise to take decisive action against those alleged to be responsible. The media has carried reports about possible ‘surgical strikes’ by India, countered by stark warnings from Pakistan that any such strike would be seen as an act of aggression leading to war, with the implication that such a war may not remain ‘limited’. Just so that the message is not lost on anyone, low-flying Pakistan Air Force fighters have been criss-crossing Pakistani skies. Continue reading »

WASHINGTON: The mobilisation of Pakistani troops to its eastern border with India has caused some surprise here, as the US has seen little if any evidence that an Indian strike or military action against Pakistan is likely or imminent.
On the other hand, last week, the US extended an assurance to Pakistan that war could be ruled out, while urging Islamabad to begin dismantling what infrastructure may still exist that can make cross-border terrorism possible. Pakistan, which has been asking for ‘evidence’ for the Mumbai attacks, has yet to make up its mind as to what course of action it is going to opt for. Continue reading »
The writer was Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s political secretary and close aide, and a former member of Parliament
“Safdar, how about some naaras?” Bibi’s last words to Safdar. Bibi was sitting between Makhdoom Amin Fahim and me; I was sitting on her right. Safdar was seated behind us in that ill-fated jeep, on that calamitous day of Dec 27, 2007, as we left Liaquat Bagh, Rawalpindi, after a rousing election rally. “Zinda hai Bhutto zinda hai!” The people shout slogans. She shouts the same words back at them. A heartbeat later she seems to abruptly dart back into the jeep — I feel a load, my heart sinks, Bibi’s head falls into my lap. “Get up, Bibi!” I say while trying to steady her with my hands. She does not stir. Another heartbeat and we are thrown against the ceiling by what is undoubtedly a close-range explosion. My body feels a warm gush of fluid dribbling down. “Blood!” I scream. “Drive!” Safdar shouts, “Drive FAST!” This cannot be happening. This cannot have happened. Continue reading »

Pakistan’s 10th and 11th divisions have been put on high alert, Indian media said, and troops had been stationed in Rajouri and Poonch sectors of Kashmir. Continue reading »
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) Thursday said the overwhelming majority of Pakistani expatriates were still using hundi to transfer funds home bypassing the legal banking systems.
The trend is depriving the country of legitimate taxes as well as foreign exchange and the government should try to tap potential of three million overseas Pakistanis by introducing sweeping reforms in the existing banking system. Continue reading »
