The rupee, somehow, managed to stop sharp erosion in its value against dollar on interbank market at the weekend, dealers said. The rupee shed 20 paisa against the dollar for buying at 76.60 and it also lost 15 paisa for selling at 76.65 amid expectations that the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) may enter with the preventive measures to stop the dollar’s berserk following the unforeseen uncertainties, money experts said.

WE have all heard of environmental degradation. The ozone layer of the earth’s upper atmosphere is becoming thinner and there is the danger that one day it may develop a hole, which will admit radiation and other influences from the outer space hazardous to life on this planet. Continue reading »

August 14 is as august as a day can get, both for Pakistanis who have witnessed the perils of partition and experienced the anguish of being in a subservient role as well as those of us born after independence; the latter can be attributed largely to ‘temporal depth’ – the characteristic understanding in nations of the past forming part of the present – and our collective consciousness, both of which we hope, will cascade to the next generation. We may detect some similarities between commando culture and cowboy culture. After all, there always seemed something personal in the bond between Pervez Musharraf and George W Bush. And this thought may remind us of Hollywood’s classic John Wayne westerns. One similarity could be the tendency to shoot from the hip. Brother Bush hasn’t been returning calls for the past three weeks. The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques is willing to offer safe custody but no more. The Mayor of Greater Istanbul is in no mood to attract Al Qaeda to Anatolia. In Islamabad, the five-foot-one-inch tall woman, the very face of American awe in this country, is trying to secure security for Uncle Sam’s most supple of nephews. An ex-high commissioner, Mark Lyall Grant, the grandson of Sir Lyall (Lyallpur was named after this lieutenant-governor of Punjab), is also trying to jump-start his long-lost colonial sway to get Musharraf legal immunity. Sadly, Chak Shahzad isn’t secure to secure a mortal with a thousand suicidal foes. Then, the chateau at the Chak Shahzad farm isn’t ready yet either. Continue reading »

The impeachment document is going to be a significant historic document; a record important to professional historians and scholars, who, in future, would wish to understand Pakistan, its politics and of course its politicians, and will make it the subject of their doctoral researches.
