The British Council has opened British Chevening Scholarship for enabling future leaders, decision-makers and opinion formers from around the world to become familiar with the UK to gain new skills, or update current professional skills. The last date for submission of forms is Sunday, October 4th 2009. THE British Council Pakistan gave away award letters for postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom (UK) under the British Chevening Scholarship Programme to five successful candidates in a ceremony at the British Council here on Monday

David Martin, Country Director, British Council Pakistan, presented the scholarship award letters to Marryam Khan, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, Fatima Inayat, Goldsmith College, University of London, Beenish Mahmood, Goldsmith College, University of London, Abbas Ali Babar, University of Nottingham, Shagufta Zareen, Queen Mary University of London.

LAHORE: The UK Border Agency is said to have turned down up to 65 visa applications from three separate groups from Lahore planning to visit Glasgow. About half were members of the Patiala Pipe Band, based in Lahore, who were due to compete in the World Pipe Band Championships this weekend. Others were from the Lahore district government and the Lahore Chamber of Commerce. Lahore has been twinned with Glasgow since 2006. The British government has come up with a new idea on how to tailor citizenship to political loyalty and the country’s economic needs. Under a new points system, an applicant’s skills and respect for British values will count in his/her favour, while those showing an “active disregard” for these values will be penalised by having points taken away.

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has planned 1,500 scholarships for meritorious students wanting to pursue higher education in nursing and midwifery.
