Govt wants universities to use own resources

After making no payment of allocated billions of rupees for development funds in the last several months, the government has now asked the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to come up with a business plan such as utilising hundreds of acres of prime land lying idle at the disposal of universities to run educational institutions on modern lines.
Instead of focusing only on construction of huge buildings, the government is asking the HEC and its subordinate universities to devise a roadmap for improving skills and training of professors and lecturers as well as developing faculties of crucial subjects up to the desired mark.

The passing percentage of around 11 government colleges in the province in the BA/BSc annual examinations was zero percent, while that of around 70 colleges in Punjab was below 20 percent.

The Federal Investigation Agency in Punjab has launched a crackdown against student consultants who are involved in illegal activities such as human trafficking and minting money from people through fraudulent practices.
There are hundreds of such consultants working across the province who allure students mostly from the middle and lower classes in the name of making them win scholarships and providing easy visas to different countries across the world.
Sources in the FIA told Daily Times that a number of criminals were even running human trafficking businesses in the guise of student consultancies and that they had connections with the “international mafia of human smugglers in the region”.

A drastic cut in the annual budget is likely to force Higher Education Commission (HEC) to drop 80 per cent of students for foreign scholarships due to non-availability of required funds, sources told ‘The News’ here on Friday.
The data showed that HEC set a target to select 800 students for foreign scholarships in MS, MPhil leading to PhD in universities of US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, Singapore, Germany, France and Cuba.
The annual PSDP budget for the HEC has been reduced from Rs22.5 billion to Rs15.7 billion and now it is finding it difficult to provide required funds to 640 students for foreign scholarships.

ISLAMABAD: COMSATS in collaboration with Lancaster University UK here on Thursday launched Dual Degree Programme (DDP) enabling the willing students to obtain a degree simultaneously from high ranking international and national university.
The DDP was launched at a local hotel. This landmark agreement between COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) and Lancaster University (LU) UK would allow 250 Pakistani students to earn an international degree from a high-ranking UK University in addition to their own degree from CIIT.
Initially, the DDP is being launched from Fall 2010 in the disciplines of Management Sciences, Computer Science and Electrical (Telecom) Engineering. However, plans are underway to include other disciplines as well. In this regard CIIT has announced opening of admissions for Fall 2010. Continue reading »
