Recently, the president Asif Ali Zardari was invited by Chinese government. He visited and stayed in Hubei Province and Shanghai from Feb. 20 to Feb. 23. He showed his interests in finance, banking, large-scale construction and Shanghai’s urban development. He said the basic purpose of his visit here is to study the Chinese model of power generation and development in agriculture sector. He identified possible areas of cooperation between Pakistan and China in hybrid seed, modern agriculture technology, water management, high efficiency irrigation and water pumping through solar technology.

Power sector

In his latest visit to China, the president Asif Ali Zardari visited different factories and organizations. Pakistan and China agreed to extend cooperation in energy and power sector. The Wapda Chairman signed a hydel power project with Three Gorges Project Corporation (TGPC). Under the agreement, China would assist Pakistan technically in hydel power generation. The TGPC President said that his corporation was ready to assist Pakistan in every possible way to overcome its energy challenges. Easy and smooth of energy supply has become mantra of every government around the globe and Pakistan is not any exemption. Energy generates power and power has become a rarity in our country. The sacristy of energy resources (rise by 10-12 percent annually) has already created multidimensional socio-economic problems in the country and saga still continues. A consortium of three financial institutions i.e. Islamic Development Bank, Asian Development Bank and World Bank has recently agreed to provide $ 1 billion to Pakistan to import electricity from Central Asian Republics (CARs). The ministers of four countries, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan signed a  resolution to proceed further with the Central Asia/South Asia Regional Electricity Market (Casarem) project envisaging transmission of 1,300 MW from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to Afghanistan and Pakistan; but further commitment to the project will be linked to the availability of financing. The federal commerce minister Ahmad Mukhtar announced the trade policy for the fiscal year 2008-09. Decision was taken to improve competitiveness and quality of products, and to develop small and medium sized sector to increase its share in total exports. It set an export target of $22.10 billion which seems to be unachievable due to denial of research and development support, high petroleum prices, severe energy crisis and utility rates in the country.
