With completion of work on underpasses and flyovers in Islamabad, the capital would become a traffic signal-free city, said SSP (Traffic) Zubair Hashmi.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, he said that after completion of work on the underpass, Jinnah Avenue would be declared signal-free. Work is under way to make Islamabad Highway a super highway.

The SSP said that for introducing a better traffic management system, the ITP as part of its plan in the first phase declared Aabpara Chowk, Dhokri Chowk and Pirwadhai Chowk signal-free on experimental basis. After consultation with the CDA, the Zero Point chowk would also be made signal-free.

To provide parking area to public in Blue Area, the old Fazal-e-Haq Road has been declared a parking spot to facilitate motorists, he added.

The SSP said that the ITP wanted to provide better facilities to the masses and took action against public service vehicles. On complaints of commuters, tickets were issued to 719 public service drivers for route violation, 280 for misbehaving with passengers, 736 for overloading and 126 for overcharging, 1,304 for parking in restricted area, 74 for smoke emitting, 416 for using pressure horns and drivers of 7,124 vehicles were issued tickets for other violations last month.

Overspeeding in the capital is being strictly checked to control accidents. Therefore the ratio of fatal accidents has reduced to 50 per cent while fatalities remained 56.67 per cent. Likewise the ratio of injuries has also reduced to 70.51 per cent and non-fatal accidents ratio is 56.67 percent as compared to the previous year.

Commenting on enforcement of law, the SSP (traffic) said that the ITP took action against drivers of 44,768 vehicles in total, in which 6,862 were taxis, 7,468 wagons, 4,507 Suzuki pickups, 4,120 buses and 4,722 were trucks. As many as 6,402 motorcyclists and 10,687 motorists were challaned during March.

Action is being initiated against smokers under Anti-Smoking Act while travelling in public service vehicles. It is also the responsibility of citizens to inform the ITP through Traffic Helpline if they witness any violation, enabling ITP to take action against violators.
